Pinochio’s ‘Sebastian’ à la Nicky…

December 12, 2022

Today I watched a documentary about ‘the making of’ the new animated motion picture about Pinochio. Oh how I wish I was 40 years younger and on the verge of choosing a career! I am absolutely positive I would have landed in the wonderful world of movie animation. There is one character in this new movie that looked very familiar for me and after some thinking it came to me: I was once asked to illustrate a book and one of its characters was a cricket! So here is my ‘Sebastian the cricket’, à la Nicky!

This dates back to the eighties or nineties, when I still did a lot of artwork in ink. I had a wide array of professional Rothring drawing pens in different sizes and, even though I am not known for possessing great personal patience, I had a lot of it when drawing. The ‘dotting’ technique was my favourite way to show shades of gray.

In case you are wondering: the contract for the book never happened, so I still have a lot of the drawings, custom created, lying around. I kind of like this guy! It is a fairly small ink-drawing on paper, unframed, and if you like it, let me know, and we can talk about the price.
