‘Sorrow’: the portrait that took a long time to develop

October 28, 2022

Sometimes paintings need a long time to develop and this portrait is a good example. Based on many different women, I entitled her “Sorrow”. It was in the early stages, summer 2021, when we decided to convert my basement studio to a ‘delivery room’ for our now resident feral cat Mitsy. I put the paint tubes away to make space and ‘Sorrow’ stood on an easel, under a cloth. I almost forgot about her!

But recently she was calling me and I decided to take it to the finish line. The portrait follows the method of the old masters, that can produce fairly dark paintings and I kind of like that for certain facial expressions.
