Did you miss the art show this weekend? Come and see what I put in the show!

March 23, 2026

Well, the 3-day art event organised by the St. Thomas Art Guild is done. We closed the doors yesterday at 5pm. Art shows are wonderful. For me especially it was the perfect opportunity to present myself to a new community of art lovers and also get better acquainted with the members of this Guild, that I only recently joined. Now to try and link their art to their names… 🙂

Art shows are a great way to meet with the audience and listen to their thoughts of my work. I put a variety of works in this show. Old and new and different styles. Works that got a lot of compliments were my Palomino Horse and the Fall Ploughing. And one work even got an honorable mention by the judges! More about that below. In general, people were impressed with the variety of subjects represented in my work. And I loved hearing that. I don’t like to be boxed into a certain category of subjects. That feels like a limitation that I do not want to bring to my work. I am interested in a lot of subjects and styles and I want to keep growing and trying out new things. That is why I put some of my more abstract brand new paintings in the show alongside the usual representative works. Who know what I will put up next?

My “Shoe Stand-off” caught the eye of the judges. It got an honorable mention and as a brand new member of the Guild I am really chuffed about that.

The judges found that the composition of this acrylic painting “… cleverly uses repetition and contrast in footwear and colour to create visual rhythm.” Everybody discovers something different in this work. Have a look and see for yourself if you agree. For me, the focal point was in trying to show how much women can suffer wearing these high heeled shoes. The weight pushing down on their arches and toes was what I wanted to show. And of course, it became clear quickly that two of those shoes were involved in a bit of a confrontation as well. That adds humour to the scene, don’t you think?
And for those who wonder: no, I do not wear these types of beautiful gems of shoes myself… I am much more comfortable in sneakers or sandals! Usually splattered with paint…

Red is the colour of love. And it certainly should be the colour of self love, hence the title “Self Love”. This acrylic painting on board uses warm orange and red hues to symbolise the warmth of self love; something a lot of women have trouble with but should really practice, because it will radiate inside them and from them. And make them stronger and more self-assured. Love our bodies the way they are, cherish our skills and talents and just appreciate ourselves.

10.25×15.50″ – Brand new acrylic painting on board, framed in a classic wooden frame

“Rain Worship” is the title of this piece. In Canada we do not really experience spring. Instead, our sometimes harsh winters transition into summer with lot of rainy days. When there is just some splattering during the day, rain is boring and depressing. But when there is a downpour, why not embrace your inner child, go out and welcome the rains of spring? Worship the moisture that signals the coming of spring and hydrates the fields and promotes the growing of new greens and other vegetation. Never mind that you get wet, enjoy the waters of life!

You cannot be of Dutch descent and not ever paint a tulip. This was what I was thinking when I visited the famous flower fields in The Netherlands quite recently. What struck me was the presence of a single differently coloured tulip in practically every field. I translated that into that flower defying the otherwise meticulously organised fields of flower. “The defiant tulip” is the title of this work. And certainly described how I like to live my life. Subtly like this yellow tulip, but different nevertheless!

“The Jump” is the group title for the following 3 works. They are dedicated to taking a chance on something new, alone or with a loved one. Jumping into an adventure, or, if you prefer, leaving behind the turmoil of your current circumstances and choosing a better life for yourself. The faces of the figures in the paintings are left largely undefined, to give you the space to imagine your own character for each of them. They are set against a backdrop of chaotic colours and shapes that support the implied chaos that often preceeds big decisions and swift action. The velocity of the jump is supported bij quick brush strokes. All three works also express my own decision to break with the detail of fully representational work and venture out in the fascinating world of bright colour hues and less precise detailing with more abstraction.
The works were created as a series of 3, but they can also be purchased independently. Because the originals were painted on paper, they are matted and behind glass, set in beautiful bright yellow frames that echo the colour hues in each of these brand new works. Enjoy!

A note about pricing

In these difficult economic times, it can be frustrating to fall in love with a piece of artwork, only to find the price too high for your purse strings. I completely understand. As an artist, I also am confronted with the never-ending (it seems) increase in prices for materials. Did you know that some 50 ml acrylic paints cost well over $30 per tube? Frames these days for a medium sized piece of art quickly go over $100. Especially when they have been custom-made to elevate and complement the art they hold. There is simply no way for artists to sell their art and cover their materials, let alone the time they invest in the creative process. We are inspired to create what we love and even though sales may not be our primary driver, it IS nice to imagine that the artist is not the only person enjoying the fruits of their labour. There is no greater compliment to my work than to see it adorn the walls of someone who puts it on the walls in their home or business!

Therefore I always try to be mindful of my prices. And keep them fair.
First of all, work that is a bit older is typically priced lower than brand new pieces. Frames will obviously add to the sales price as well. When art is painted on a flat surface, like mine often is, it requires mounting and at the very least matting. If paintings are done on paper, it is advised to also frame them behind glass. Glass is sometimes also added when the components of the art are particularly sensitive and vulnerable to touching fingers. I try not to choose just any frame or matte, but select them in such a way that they are really part of the art. A cheap frame from a hobby store may save you money, but will it look as good with the art as a custom frame, selected by the artist? I think not. Apart from the difference between early and brand new work, and framing/matting, the main other denominators for picking a fair price are the complexity of the subject and the size of the final artwork.

If you wish to own an original artwork, and the price is too steep to pay all at once, I can offer lay-by. Which means I can reserve the piece for you for a limited time, which you use to cut the sales price in several smaller payments.

Alternatively, we can discuss creating an art print. I work with an experienced printer who can deliver a print on canvas that will look practically identical to the original. The advantage is not just a financial one: you may want to own a print that is at a size that better fits your walls.

It is my believe that a house without art, is not really a place that you have made your own. The objects you use to decorate your interior are an extension of your personality and will ensure that you will always look around your house with great pride and joy! And if I can help you with that, it would be a pleasure and an honour.
