I wish I could claim that this was based on one of my own photographs… but it is not. I took a series of phone pictures during a television documentary about the North Pole a while ago, as inspiration for a future painting.
The other day, when I was playing around with paint pouring, the first few results were not really good. The background of this new painting was one of them. I realised, when it was done, that it looked just like an underwater image. And when I then remembered the little baby seal of the documentary, I set to work.
The original video series shows the very first dive of a baby seal. Its mother had been trying to coax the white fur-ball to take a dip, but it took him/her a while to gather up the courage to do so. I can relate! Of course, seals are perfectly equipped to deal with frigid oceans and my guess is that once they have done their first dive, they will loose all hesitation about the new element in their life.
