A new portrait… Dr Edith Eger

October 9, 2022

I don’t typically paint ‘celebreties’. But I have made an exception for this fabulous 95-year young (!) survivor of the Holocaust by the name of Dr. Edith Eger. I am currently participating in a beta version of her new self-development course and I am quite taken with this very special child of the Universe. As an artist, how can you not be moved to paint her?

Dr Eger, also affectionally referred to as ‘Edie’, has already shared her wisdom and insights with many people in her two books ‘The Choice’ and ‘The Gift’. I would recommend both to anyone, what with the many pearls of wisdom contained it their pages. And now ‘Edie’ is gearing up for a new internet course that will make her intriguing view of life even more accessible.

I have had the pleasure of meeting ‘Edie’ via Zoom during the course preparations, the closest one can get to a personal encounter in these (hopefully) last Covid restricted times. Her personality shines brightly, even through the frame of an electronic meeting platform. As one of the few remaining survivors who actually personally and vividly remember the concentration camps, it is impossible not to be in awe of her life story. If you are interested to find out more about her, here is her website:

This painting is one in a series of new portraits and there are more to come later this year. I am enjoying painting with the techniques of the ‘classic masters’. An extra challenge for me because I do not use oil paints, but have acrylics on my palet. But not as much of a challenge as it was for the old masters, who had to do their work by either the light of oil lamps or natural light. At least there is electricity in my basement studio!
