Painting Backstories: About sketching

There are probably very few painters who have never created a study of a subject by way of a rough sketch. To me, sketches still feel very familiar, because I started out my career in art with pencil and charcoal. I still like to sketch, or doodle with these mediums. But I also still use it to find out what the best approach is to a certain subject I want to paint at a later time. It takes the ‘preciousness’ out of the beginnings of a difficult topic and makes the empty canvas less daunting. One can be unencumbered and experimental and try out different ways of portraying the subject while sketching. I actually wrote a blog post about sketches, that you can find a reference to below.
